1. Definition of Oil Crops

  • Oil Palm: Primarily by germinated seeds (seedlings) from a nursery. Vegetative propagation through tissue culture is also used but is more complex.

4. Land Preparation (Pre-planting and Planting Operations)

Proper land preparation is essential for good crop establishment:

  • Site Selection: Choosing a suitable area based on soil and climatic requirements.
  • Clearing: Removing existing vegetation using manual methods (cutlass, hoe) or mechanical means (tractor).
  • Tillage: Ploughing (primary tillage) to loosen the soil and harrowing (secondary tillage) to break down clods and create a fine tilth.
  • Ridging/Mounding: Creating ridges or mounds for planting, especially for crops like groundnut and melon to improve drainage and aeration.

  • Inorganic Fertilizers:
    • Oil Palm: Requires high amounts of N, P, K, Mg, and B. NPK fertilizers are commonly applied in split doses.
    • Melon: Benefits from NPK fertilizers, especially nitrogen for vegetative growth and potassium for fruit development.
    • Groundnut: Being a legume, it fixes nitrogen, but benefits from phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to enhance pod development. Calcium is also important for pegging.

6. Harvesting, Processing, and Storage of Oil Crops

Post-harvest operations are critical for quality and shelf-life:

  • Harvesting:
    • Oil Palm: Ripe fresh fruit bunches are harvested manually using a cutlass or harvesting pole.
    • Melon: Fruits are harvested when they are fully mature, indicated by a change in colour and a hollow sound when tapped.
    • Groundnut: Plants are dug up when the leaves turn yellow and start to shed, indicating maturity of the pods.
  • Processing:
