Identification of Specific Common Crops

1. Oil Palm (Elaeis guineensis)

The oil palm is a major oil-producing crop.

Its identification features include:

  • Fruits: Small, oval, reddish-orange when ripe, arranged in large bunches (fruitlets are drupes).
  • Seeds: Hard kernel inside a fibrous mesocarp.
  • Leaves: Large, pinnate fronds.

2. Cocoa (Theobroma cacao)

Cocoa is valued for its beans, used to make chocolate.

Its identification features include:

  • Pods: Large, ribbed, oval to elongated, green turning yellow, orange, or red when ripe (botanically a berry).
  • Seeds (beans): Flat, oval, embedded in white pulp inside the pod.
  • Leaves: Simple, alternate, oblong.

3. Kola Nut (Cola acuminata / Cola nitida)

Kola nut is a stimulant crop.

Its identification features include:

  • Nuts (seeds): Irregularly shaped, reddish, whitish, or pinkish, typically 2-5 cotyledons.
  • Pods: Hard, woody, star-shaped when split open.
  • Taste: Bitter.

4. Rubber (Hevea brasiliensis)

Rubber is primarily cultivated for its latex.

Its identification features include:

  • Seeds: Large, ovoid, mottled brown with dark spots/stripes, smooth and shiny.
  • Fruit: A three-lobed capsule that splits open explosively when dry.

6. Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea)
