Meaning of Hormones

Hormones are chemical messengers produced by endocrine glands and released directly into the bloodstream. They travel to target organs or tissues to regulate specific physiological processes, including reproduction.

Hormonal Control of Oestrus and Ovulation

The following hormones are involved in controlling oestrus (heat period) and ovulation (release of egg):

  • Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH): Produced by the pituitary gland, it stimulates the growth and development of ovarian follicles.
  • Luteinizing Hormone (LH): Also from the pituitary gland, it triggers ovulation and the formation of the corpus luteum (CL) from the ruptured follicle.
  • Oestrogen: Produced by developing follicles, it causes the signs of oestrus and prepares the reproductive tract for mating. It also stimulates the release of LH.

Hormonal Roles in Gestation and Parturition

The following hormones play roles in gestation (pregnancy) and parturition (giving birth):

  • Progesterone: Produced primarily by the corpus luteum, it maintains pregnancy by suppressing uterine contractions and promoting the development of the uterine lining.
  • Relaxin: Produced by the ovaries and placenta, it helps to relax the pelvic ligaments and cervix, preparing the birth canal for parturition.
  • Oxytocin: Released from the pituitary gland, it causes strong uterine contractions during parturition to expel the foetus.

Hormonal Roles in Lactation

The following hormones are involved in lactation (milk production and let-down):

  • Prolactin: Produced by the pituitary gland, it stimulates the mammary glands to produce milk.
  • Oxytocin: Released in response to suckling, it causes the contraction of myoepithelial cells around the milk ducts, leading to milk ejection (milk let-down).
