Definition of Egg Formation
Egg formation is the biological process by which a hen produces an egg, involving several stages within the reproductive tract.
Stages of Egg Formation
The process of egg formation takes place in the ovary and oviduct, involving the following stages:
- Ovary: This is where the yolk (ovum) is produced and matures. A hen has only one functional ovary.
- Infundibulum (Funnel): The mature yolk is released from the ovary (ovulation) and caught by the infundibulum. Fertilization, if it occurs, happens here. The chalazae (ropes that hold the yolk in place) also begin to form.
- Magnum: The yolk travels to the magnum, which is the longest part of the oviduct. Here, thick albumen (egg white) is secreted around the yolk. This stage takes about 3 hours.
- Isthmus: In the isthmus, the inner and outer shell membranes are formed around the albumen. This process takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
- Uterus (Shell Gland): The egg remains in the uterus for the longest period, about 18-20 hours. Here, water and mineral salts, mainly calcium carbonate, are deposited to form the hard outer shell. Pigments are also added if the egg is to be colored.
- Vagina: The fully formed egg passes through the vagina. Just before expulsion, the egg rotates so that it is laid blunt end first.
- Cloaca: The egg is expelled from the hen’s body through the cloaca.
