Problems of Farm Mechanization

1. Displacement of Workers

Farm mechanization often leads to the replacement of manual labour with machines. This can result in a significant number of people, especially rural dwellers, losing their jobs and source of income, leading to social and economic challenges.

2. Environmental Pollution

Farm machines, especially those powered by fossil fuels, contribute to environmental pollution. This occurs through:

  • Emissions of greenhouse gases and other harmful pollutants into the atmosphere.
  • Noise pollution affecting humans and wildlife.
  • Leakage of oils and fuels contaminating soil and water bodies.

3. Soil Degradation

Mechanized farming can cause various forms of soil degradation:

  • Soil Compaction: The heavy weight of farm machinery compacts the soil, reducing porosity and aeration. This hinders root penetration, water infiltration, and gas exchange, negatively affecting crop growth.
  • Destruction of Soil Structure: Repeated passes of heavy machinery can break down the natural aggregates of soil, leading to a loss of soil structure. This makes the soil more prone to erosion by wind and water.

4. Economic Limitations of Mechanization

There are several economic challenges associated with farm mechanization:

  • High Cost of Acquisition: Farm machinery is expensive to purchase, making it unaffordable for many small-scale farmers.
  • High Maintenance Costs: Machines require regular maintenance, repairs, and spare parts, which can be costly.
  • Fuel Costs: The operational cost of machines is high due to the continuous need for fuel.
  • Lack of Credit Facilities: Many farmers lack access to loans or credit to finance the purchase and maintenance of machinery.

5. Technical Know-how Limitations

The effective use of farm machinery requires specialized knowledge and skills. These limitations include:

  • Lack of Skilled Operators: There is a shortage of trained personnel to operate and manage complex farm machinery.
  • Lack of Qualified Mechanics: The absence of skilled mechanics for repairs and maintenance can lead to prolonged machine downtime.
  • Inadequate Training Facilities: Limited access to training institutions that teach modern agricultural machinery operation and maintenance.

6. Small Farm Holdings Limitation

The fragmented nature of land ownership in many developing countries, where farmers often have small, scattered plots, makes the use of large farm machinery impractical and inefficient. This reduces the economic viability of mechanization.

7. Comparison of Machine Worked Land and Manually Worked Land

There are distinct differences between land prepared using machines and land prepared manually:

  • Machine Worked Land: Often shows signs of soil compaction, uniform tillage depth, and can cover large areas quickly. May have reduced organic matter if not managed properly.
  • Manually Worked Land: Tends to have less compaction, uneven tillage depth depending on manual effort, covers smaller areas, and generally preserves soil structure better, especially with traditional methods.
