Definition of Tafsir

Tafsir literally means “explanation,” “interpretation,” or “exegesis.” In Islamic terminology, Tafsir is the science and art of interpreting the Holy Qur’an. Origin of Tafsir

The origin of Tafsir can be traced back to the time of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The Prophet himself was the first interpreter of the Qur’an, explaining verses to his companions (Sahaba) when they were unclear. After his passing, the Sahaba continued this tradition, interpreting the Qur’an for the next generation. As Islam spread and new converts joined, the need for systematic Tafsir grew, leading to its development as a distinct Islamic science.

Sources of Tafsir

The primary sources for interpreting the Qur’an are:
