Meaning of Iman

Iman means faith or belief. In Islam, it refers to belief in specific fundamental truths as revealed by Allah.

The Articles of Faith

There are six Articles of Faith in Islam. This lesson focuses on the first three:

Belief in Allah

Belief in Revealed Books

Belief in Allah

This is the most fundamental article of faith. It means believing in Allah as the One, Unique God, the Creator, Sustainer, and Cherisher of the universe, who has no partners or equals.

The following are implications of belief in Allah:

Worshipping Him alone (Tawhid).
Obeying His commands and prohibitions.
Trusting in His power, wisdom, and justice.
Fearing His punishment and hoping for His mercy.
Living a righteous and God-conscious life.

Belief in Angels

Angels are unseen beings created by Allah from light. They are His obedient servants, carrying out His commands without questioning or disobedience. They have no free will.

The following are implications of belief in Angels:

Being mindful of their presence, especially the angels who record deeds.
Encourages performing good deeds and avoiding evil.
Understanding the divine order and administration of the universe.
Realizing that Allah has countless servants who execute His will.

Belief in Revealed Books

These are divine scriptures sent by Allah through His prophets to guide humanity to the right path. Examples include the Tawrat (Torah given to Musa), Zabur (Psalms given to Dawud), Injil (Gospel given to Isa), and the Qur’an (given to Prophet Muhammad). The Qur’an is the final and preserved book of Allah.

The following are implications of belief in Revealed Books:

Seeking guidance and knowledge from the Qur’an.
Following the teachings and examples of the prophets.
Understanding Allah’s commands, prohibitions, and moral principles.
Applying the moral and legal principles taught in the books in daily life.
