Lesson Content/Board Summary
Key Concepts Related To Tauhid
1. Al-Ikhlas (Sincerity)
Meaning of Al-Ikhlas
Al-Ikhlas means sincerity, purity, and devotion in worship and all actions, exclusively for the sake of Allah (SWT). It implies performing deeds without seeking praise, recognition, or any worldly gain from others.
Connection to Tauhid
Ikhlas is the essence of Tauhid. It means directing all worship and intentions solely to Allah, affirming His absolute uniqueness and rejecting any form of shirk (associating partners with Allah). A person with Ikhlas truly embodies “La ilaha illallah” (There is no god but Allah) in their actions.
Importance of Al-Ikhlas
- It ensures the acceptance of deeds by Allah, as actions are judged by intentions.
- It purifies the heart from hypocrisy and ostentation (riya’).
- It leads to inner peace and contentment, as one’s focus is solely on pleasing Allah.
- It strengthens one’s faith and commitment to Islam.
- The Qur’an states in Surah Al-Bayyinah (98:5): “And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.”
2. Al-Qada’ wa al-Qadr (Divine Decree and Predestination)
Meaning of Al-Qada’ wa al-Qadr
Al-Qada’ refers to Allah’s eternal decree and judgment of all things, while al-Qadr refers to the measurement and manifestation of that decree in creation. It is the belief that everything that happens in the universe, good or bad, is by the will and knowledge of Allah, recorded in Al-Lawh Al-Mahfuz (The Preserved Tablet).
Connection to Tauhid
Belief in Qada’ wa al-Qadr is a fundamental aspect of Tauhid al-Rububiyyah (Oneness of Allah in Lordship). It affirms Allah’s absolute power, knowledge, and control over all creation. It means acknowledging that Allah is the sole Creator, Sustainer, and Disposer of all affairs, and nothing happens without His permission.
Importance of Al-Qada’ wa al-Qadr
- It instills patience (sabr) and gratitude (shukr) in a Muslim, knowing that both good and bad are from Allah.
- It removes anxiety and despair, as one trusts in Allah’s ultimate wisdom and plan.
- It encourages striving and effort, as Allah’s decree does not negate human free will and accountability.
- It strengthens reliance on Allah (Tawakkul) and acceptance of His decisions.
- The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, and there is good in both. Strive for that which will benefit you, seek the help of Allah, and do not be helpless. If anything befalls you, do not say, ‘If only I had done such and such,’ but rather say, ‘Qaddar Allahu wa ma sha’a fa’al’ (Allah has decreed and what He wills, He does), for ‘if only’ opens the door to the work of Shaytan.” (Sahih Muslim)
3. Tawakkul (Reliance on Allah)
Meaning of Tawakkul
Tawakkul means placing complete trust and reliance on Allah (SWT) in all matters, while simultaneously taking all necessary and permissible means. It is a state of heart where one sincerely believes that Allah is the best Disposer of affairs and that He will provide and protect.
Connection to Tauhid
Tawakkul is a manifestation of Tauhid al-Uluhiyyah (Oneness of Allah in Worship) and Tauhid al-Rububiyyah. It means worshipping Allah alone by relying on Him alone, acknowledging His power, wisdom, and mercy as the only one capable of bringing benefit or averting harm. It rejects reliance on any created being or worldly means as ultimate sources of power.
Importance of Tawakkul
- It brings tranquility and peace of mind, freeing one from excessive worry and fear.
- It is a sign of strong faith and submission to Allah’s will.
- It motivates a Muslim to strive and work hard, knowing that their efforts are part of Allah’s plan and that He will bless them.
- Allah promises to provide for those who truly rely on Him. The Qur’an states in Surah At-Talaq (65:3): “And whoever relies upon Allah – He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.”
4. Shafa`ah (Intercession)
Meaning of Shafa`ah
Shafa`ah refers to intercession, which is the act of mediating or pleading on behalf of another person, particularly on the Day of Judgment. In Islam, it is the Prophet Muhammad’s (SAW) special privilege to intercede for his Ummah (community) with Allah’s permission.
Connection to Tauhid
Shafa`ah is permissible only with Allah’s explicit permission and for those whom He wills. It does not contradict Tauhid because it is not an independent power. It is a mercy granted by Allah through His chosen servants. Believing that anyone can intercede without Allah’s permission or that intercessors possess independent power is Shirk. The Qur’an clarifies in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:255): “Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?”
Importance of Shafa`ah
- It highlights the special status and mercy of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) for his followers.
- It offers hope to believers for forgiveness and salvation on the Day of Judgment.
- It reinforces the understanding that all power and authority belong to Allah alone, as intercession itself depends on His permission.
- It encourages Muslims to follow the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW) to be worthy of his intercession.
