Arabic Text and Translation of Suratul Hummazah

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
    Woe to every slanderer, backbiter.
Who accumulates wealth and counts it.
He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.

No! He will surely be thrown into the Crusher.
And what can make you know what the Crusher is?
It is the fire of Allah, kindled.

    In extended columns.

Commentary (Tafsir) and Lessons from Suratul Hummazah

Suratul Hummazah condemns those who engage in backbiting, slandering, and mockery, as well as those who are excessively greedy for wealth, believing it will grant them immortality. The Surah warns of a severe punishment in the Hereafter, describing a fierce fire called Al-Hutama.

Key lessons from the Surah include:

  • Condemnation of Backbiting (Humazah) and Slandering (Lumazah): Backbiting involves speaking ill of someone in their absence, while slandering refers to finding faults and mocking people. Both are grave sins in Islam.
  • Warning Against Greed for Wealth: The Surah criticizes those who accumulate wealth and count it, believing it will make them live forever. True success is not in material possessions but in righteous deeds.
  • Accountability in the Hereafter: The Surah reminds believers that everyone will be held accountable for their actions, and wealth cannot save one from divine punishment.
  • Description of Al-Hutama (The Crusher): This is a terrifying description of Hellfire, which consumes everything, even penetrating to the hearts of the sinners. It will be closed over them, with no escape.
  • Importance of Good Conduct: The Surah encourages Muslims to adopt good manners, respect others, and prioritize spiritual values over worldly desires.
