Lesson Content/Board Summary

at-Tashahhud in Salat

What is at-Tashahhud?

At-Tashahhud is a special supplication (Dua) that Muslims recite while sitting during certain parts of their daily prayers (Salat). It includes greetings to Allah, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and righteous servants.

The Text of at-Tashahhud

The following is the text of at-Tashahhud:

  • Transliteration:

At-tahiyyatu lillahi was-salawatu wat-tayyibat.

  • Meaning:

All compliments, prayers, and pure words are due to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.

When is at-Tashahhud Observed?

At-Tashahhud is recited during the sitting positions (Jalsa) in Salat.

  • First Tashahhud: This is recited after the second Raka’ah in prayers that have three or four Raka’at (e.g., Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha). After this, we stand up for the remaining Raka’at.
  • Final Tashahhud: This is recited in the last Raka’ah of every Salat (e.g., after the second Raka’ah in Fajr, after the third in Maghrib, and after the fourth in Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha). After this, we give the Taslim (saying “As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah” to the right and left).
