Lesson Content/Board Summary
SUJUD AS-SAHWI (Prostration of Forgetfulness)
Definition of Sujud As-Sahwi
Sujud As-Sahwi is a prostration performed in Salat (prayer) to compensate for certain mistakes or omissions made during the prayer. It is done to correct errors like forgetting a part of the prayer or adding extra actions by mistake, ensuring the prayer remains valid.
Conditions that necessitate Sujud As-Sahwi
The following are common conditions that require Sujud As-Sahwi:
- Adding an extra Raka’ah (unit of prayer) or an extra prostration/bowing by mistake.
- Omitting a required act (Wajib) like the first Tashahhud or saying “Subhana Rabbiyal Azeem” in bowing.
- Doubting the number of Raka’at performed (e.g., unsure if it was three or four Raka’at).
- Forgetting to recite a Surah after Al-Fatiha in the first two Raka’at.
Mode of performing Sujud As-Sahwi
Sujud As-Sahwi is typically performed in one of two ways, depending on the mistake:
Option 1: Before Tasleem (Salam)
- When the mistake is an omission or a doubt about the number of Raka’at.
- After completing the final Tashahhud, before saying “Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah” (Tasleem).
- Perform two prostrations (Sujud) as in normal Salat, saying “Subhana Rabbiyal A’la” in each.
- Sit briefly between the two prostrations.
- After the second prostration, sit up and then say Tasleem to end the prayer.
Option 2: After Tasleem (Salam)
- When the mistake is an addition (e.g., performing an extra Raka’ah).
- Complete the prayer by saying Tasleem first.
- Immediately after Tasleem, perform two prostrations (Sujud) as in normal Salat, saying “Subhana Rabbiyal A’la” in each.
- Sit briefly between the two prostrations.
- After the second prostration, sit up and say Tasleem again to formally end the prayer.
