at-Tasbihi in Salat

Understanding at-Tasbihi

At-Tasbihi means glorifying Allah by saying “Subhana Rabbiyal Azeem” (Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great) during Ruku’u and “Subhana Rabbiyal A’la” (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High) during Sujud.

The following are when at-Tasbihi is observed and how many times it is recited:

  • When observed: At-Tasbihi is observed during the bowing (Ruku’u) and prostration (Sujud) positions in Salat.
  • How many times recited: It is recited at least three (3) times in each position (Ruku’u and Sujud).

The Words of at-Tasbihi

  • For Ruku’u (Bowing): Subhana Rabbiyal Azeem (سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيمِ) – “Glory be to my Lord, the Most Great.”
  • For Sujud (Prostration): Subhana Rabbiyal A’la (سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى) – “Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.”

Practical Performance of Ruku’u and Sujud

  • Ruku’u (Bowing): After reciting Suratul Fatihah and another Surah, bow down from the waist, keeping your back straight and parallel to the ground. Place your hands on your knees with fingers spread apart. Look at your feet.
  • Sujud (Prostration): After standing up from Ruku’u, prostrate by first placing your knees on the ground, then your hands, then your nose and forehead. Ensure your elbows are lifted off the ground and your toes are pointed towards the Qiblah.
