Food is any substance consumed for health and growth,providing essential nutrients for bodily functions.
Foodstuff
Foodstuff refers to edible substances providing nutrition, typically from plants, animals, or fungi, containing carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals.
Types of Foodstuff with examples
Foodstuff can be categorized based on their origin and nutritional content. These include:
- Roots: Cassava, yam, sweet potato, carrot, beetroot
- Vegetables: Spinach, kale, broccoli, cabbage, tomatoes, cucumber
- Fruits: Mango, banana, orange, pineapple, apple, watermelon
- Grains and Cereals: Rice, maize (corn), wheat, oats, barley, millet
- Legumes: Beans, lentils, peas, chickpeas, soybeans, groundnuts
- Meat: Beef, chicken, pork, goat, lamb, turkey

Functions of different Food nutrients in the Body
To maintain good health, our bodies need various nutrients from food. Each nutrient has a specific role:
Carbohydrates
Carbohydrates are the body’s primary source of energy, fueling daily activities and bodily functions. Examples are: Bread, rice, pasta, potatoes.
Proteins
Proteins are essential for building and repairing body tissues, supporting growth, and producing enzymes and hormones. Examples are: Meat, fish, eggs, beans, nuts.
Fats
Fats provide a concentrated source of energy, help absorb vitamins, and insulate the body. Examples are: Butter,oils,nuts,avocados.
Vitamins
Vitamins are organic compounds that support various body functions,including vision,skin health,and immunity.Examples are: fruits, vegetables, dairy.
Minerals
Minerals are inorganic substances that strengthen bones and teeth, aid muscle and nervous system function, and regulate bodily processes. Examples are: Meat, dairy, fruits, vegetables, nuts.
