Poultry Egg Formation
Poultry egg formation is the biological process by which a hen produces an egg. This process occurs in the reproductive tract of the hen, primarily involving the ovary and oviduct.
The main stages of egg formation are:
- Ovulation: Release of the yolk from the ovary.
- Infundibulum (Funnel): The yolk enters here, where fertilisation may occur.
- Magnum: Albumen (egg white) is added around the yolk. This takes about 3 hours.
- Isthmus: Inner and outer shell membranes are formed. This takes about 1.25 hours.
- Uterus (Shell Gland): Water, minerals, and the shell pigment are added, and the hard shell is formed. This is the longest stage, taking about 18-20 hours.
- Vagina: The egg passes through the vagina and is laid.
Incubation Process
Incubation is the process of providing suitable conditions (temperature, humidity, ventilation, and turning) for the development of an embryo inside an egg until it hatches.
There are two main types of incubation:
- Natural Incubation: A broody hen sits on the eggs, providing warmth and turning them. This method is suitable for small-scale poultry keeping.
- Artificial Incubation: Eggs are placed in an incubator, which is a machine that mimics the conditions provided by a broody hen. This method is used for large-scale production.
Key factors for successful artificial incubation include:
- Temperature: Usually around 37.5°C to 38°C (99.5°F to 100.5°F).
- Humidity: Important for preventing excessive moisture loss from the egg, typically 50-60% relative humidity, increasing to 65-70% during hatching.
- Ventilation: Ensures adequate oxygen supply and removal of carbon dioxide.
- Turning: Eggs are turned regularly (at least 3-5 times daily) to prevent the embryo from sticking to the shell membrane.
Chick Development
Chick development, or embryogenesis, is the process of the embryo growing and developing inside the egg during incubation. This process takes approximately 21 days for chickens.
Key developmental milestones include:
- Day 1-3: Formation of the nervous system, blood vessels, and early heartbeats.
- Day 4-6: Development of eyes, limbs, and formation of the amnion and allantois (membranes for protection and waste management).
- Day 7-10: Feather follicles appear, and the beak starts to form.
- Day 11-14: Scales on legs and claws develop, and the embryo becomes more bird-like.
- Day 15-18: The embryo grows rapidly, filling most of the egg, and the yolk sac begins to be drawn into the body cavity.
- Day 19-21: The chick positions itself for hatching, absorbs the remaining yolk sac, and starts pipping (breaking the shell) using its egg tooth. Hatching occurs on day 21.
