What is the Water Cycle?
The water cycle is a natural process showing how water changes form (solid,liquid,gas) and moves around Earth. It’s a continuous cycle.
Elements of the Water Cycle
The water cycle consists of several key processes that ensure the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. These include:
- Evaporation: The sun heats water (rivers, lakes, oceans), turning it into vapor that rises.
- Condensation: Rising water vapor cools, forming tiny water droplets in clouds.These droplets can also form dew.
- precipitation: Heavy cloud droplets fall as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
- Collection: Fallen water gathers in rivers, lakes, oceans, and underground, then evaporates again.
- Transpiration: This is the process by which plants release water vapor into the atmosphere through their leaves.
- Infiltration: Some of the precipitation seeps into the ground and becomes groundwater.
Causes of Drying Up of Streams
Streams and rivers can dry up due to various factors that reduce the amount of water flowing through them. These include:
- Less Rainfall: Dry seasons mean less rain, reducing water in streams and rivers.
- Increased Evaporation: Sun’s heat increases evaporation, leaving less water.
- Deforestation: Removal of trees reduces water retention in the soil, leading to decreased stream flow.
- Overuse of Water: Excessive water usage for agriculture, industry, and domestic purposes can deplete stream water levels.
- Climate Change: Changes in weather patterns can lead to prolonged droughts,causing streams to dry up.
Evaporated water doesn’t disappear; it becomes part of the water cycle, returning as rain.
