Sound Energy

Production of Sound

Sound is produced when an object vibrates. The vibration causes movement in the surrounding medium, creating sound waves that can be heard.
Examples are:

  1. Striking a drum skin
  2. Ringing a bell
  3. Plucking guitar strings
Transmission of Sound

Sound travels through a medium from the source to the listener. It cannot travel through a vacuum.
The following are:

  1. Solids as sound transmitters
  2. Liquids as sound transmitters
  3. Gases as sound transmitters
Reflection of Sound

Reflection of sound occurs when sound waves bounce off hard surfaces.
These include:

  1. Echo
  2. Reverberation
Hearing

Hearing is the process by which the ear detects sound vibrations and sends signals to the brain.
The following are:

  1. Outer ear – collects sound waves
  2. Middle ear – amplifies vibrations
  3. Inner ear – converts vibrations to nerve signals
