Magnetism

Meaning of Magnetism

Magnetism is the force by which a magnet attracts or repels certain materials, especially iron and steel. It is a property that allows magnets to pull magnetic materials towards themselves.

Examples are:

  1. Attraction of iron nails by a magnet
  2. Repulsion between similar magnetic poles
Lodestone

Lodestone is a natural magnet found in nature. It is a type of mineral called magnetite that can attract iron without being artificially made.

The following are characteristics of lodestone:

  1. It is a natural magnet
  2. It attracts iron materials
  3. It has two magnetic poles
Law of Magnetism

The law of magnetism explains how magnets interact with each other. It shows the relationship between magnetic poles.

They are:

  1. Like poles repel each other
  2. Unlike poles attract each other
Magnetic Poles and Magnetic Fields

Every magnet has two poles known as the north pole and the south pole. The region around a magnet where its force is felt is called a magnetic field.

These include:

  1. North pole
  2. South pole
  3. Magnetic field lines showing direction of force
Care of Magnets

Magnets must be handled properly to maintain their strength and effectiveness.

The following are ways to care for magnets:

  1. Do not drop or hit magnets
  2. Store magnets with keepers
  3. Avoid heating magnets
  4. Keep magnets away from electrical appliances
