What are Ceramics?

Production of Ceramics

The production of ceramics involves several key steps:

  • Firing (Baking): The dried piece is heated in a kiln at very high temperatures (over 1000°C). This process hardens the material and gives it strength.
  • Glazing: A glassy coating (glaze) can be applied to the fired ceramic and then re-fired to make it waterproof, smooth, and decorative.

What is Glass?

Glass is a hard, brittle, transparent or translucent material primarily made from sand (silica), which has been cooled from a molten state without crystallizing.

  • Soda ash (sodium carbonate)
  • Limestone (calcium carbonate)
  • Cullet (recycled glass)

Production of Glass

The production of glass involves the following steps:

  • Melting: The batch mixture is heated in a furnace to very high temperatures (around 1500°C – 1700°C) until it melts into a liquid called molten glass.

  • Annealing: The formed glass products are slowly cooled in a controlled manner to relieve internal stresses that could cause them to crack. This process strengthens the glass.
