The following are facts about the ozone layer:
- It acts as a protective shield around the earth.
- It prevents harmful UV rays from reaching living organisms.
- It is mainly found between 15–35 km in the stratosphere.
- Its presence helps maintain a balanced climate on earth.
Importance of the Ozone Layer
The ozone layer plays a vital role in protecting life and maintaining the stability of the earth’s environment.
The following are the importance of the ozone layer:
- It shields living things from harmful ultraviolet radiation.
- It reduces the risk of skin cancer and eye problems in humans.
- It helps plants grow properly by filtering sunlight.
- It protects animals and aquatic life from radiation damage.
- It contributes to maintaining global temperature balance.
Effects of Depletion of Ozone Layer
Depletion of the ozone layer means the gradual destruction or thinning of the layer due to human activities that release harmful gases such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). This leads to the entry of dangerous UV rays into the earth’s surface.
The following are the effects of ozone layer depletion:
- It causes global warming due to increased heat from the sun.
- It leads to greenhouse effect, trapping more heat in the atmosphere.
- It causes melting of ice caps and glaciers, resulting in flooding.
- It increases cases of skin cancer and eye cataracts in humans.
