  2. Radial Pattern: Streams flow outward from a central high point like a hill or volcano.
  3. Centripetal Pattern: Streams flow inward into a central depression or basin.
  4. Trellis Pattern: Rivers and tributaries flow in parallel valleys separated by ridges.
  5. Rectangular Pattern: Rivers flow at right angles due to faults or fractures in the land.
Causes of Flooding

Flooding occurs when water covers land that is normally dry. It happens when the volume of water exceeds the capacity of the drainage channel or soil.

The following are the main causes of flooding:

  1. Heavy and prolonged rainfall.
  2. Blocked drainage systems by waste and debris.
  3. Overflow of rivers and dams.
  4. Poor urban planning and construction on waterways.
  5. Deforestation and soil erosion.
  6. Melting of ice and rising sea levels.

Effects of Flooding on Community and Farmland

Flooding causes destruction to lives, property, and the environment. Its impact can be short-term or long-term.

The following are the effects of flooding:

  1. Loss of lives and displacement of people.
  2. Destruction of houses, roads, and bridges.
  3. Washing away of fertile topsoil on farmland.
  4. Contamination of water sources.
  5. Damage to crops and livestock.
  6. Outbreak of diseases like cholera and typhoid.

Prevention of Flooding

Flooding can be prevented or controlled by adopting good environmental management and infrastructural measures.

The following are ways of preventing flooding:
