Major Spheres of the Earth

The Earth is composed of several interacting systems or spheres. These major spheres include:

  • Atmosphere: The layer of gases surrounding the Earth. It provides air for breathing, protects from harmful solar radiation, and influences weather and climate.
  • Biosphere: The part of Earth where life exists. It includes all living organisms (plants and animals) and their interactions with the other spheres.
  • Hydrosphere: All the water on Earth, including oceans, rivers, lakes, groundwater, and ice.
  • Lithosphere: The solid outer part of the Earth, consisting of the crust and the uppermost mantle. It includes rocks, soil, and landforms.

Interior Structure of the Earth

The Earth is made up of concentric layers, much like an onion. These layers are:

  • Crust: This is the outermost, thinnest, and solid layer of the Earth.
    • It is divided into continental crust (thicker, less dense, made mostly of granite) and oceanic crust (thinner, denser, made mostly of basalt).
  • Mantle: This is the thickest layer, lying beneath the crust.
    • It is mostly solid but behaves like a very viscous fluid over geological time, allowing convection currents.
    • It is composed mainly of silicate rocks rich in iron and magnesium.
  • Core: This is the innermost layer of the Earth.
    • It is divided into the outer core (liquid, composed mainly of iron and nickel) and the inner core (solid, also composed mainly of iron and nickel).
    • The outer core generates Earth’s magnetic field.

Igneous Rocks

Igneous rocks are formed from the cooling and solidification of molten rock (magma or lava).

The following are characteristics of igneous rocks:

  • They are usually hard and resistant to erosion.
  • They do not contain fossils.
  • They are often crystalline, with interlocking mineral grains.
  • They can be fine-grained (extrusive) or coarse-grained (intrusive).

Types of igneous rocks include:

  • Intrusive/Plutonic Igneous Rocks: Form when magma cools slowly beneath the Earth’s surface (e.g., Granite, Gabbro).
  • Extrusive/Volcanic Igneous Rocks: Form when lava cools rapidly on the Earth’s surface (e.g., Basalt, Obsidian).

Sedimentary Rocks

Sedimentary rocks are formed from the accumulation and compaction of sediments (fragments of other rocks, minerals, or organic matter).

The following are characteristics of sedimentary rocks:

  • They often show distinct layers or strata.
  • They may contain fossils.
  • They are typically softer than igneous or metamorphic rocks.
  • They are formed near the Earth’s surface.

Types of sedimentary rocks include:

  • Clastic Sedimentary Rocks: Formed from fragments of pre-existing rocks (e.g., Sandstone, Shale).
  • Chemical Sedimentary Rocks: Formed from the precipitation of minerals from water (e.g., Limestone, Rock Salt).
  • Organic Sedimentary Rocks: Formed from the accumulation of organic matter (e.g., Coal, Chalk).

Metamorphic Rocks

Metamorphic rocks are formed when existing rocks (igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks) are changed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions.

The following are characteristics of metamorphic rocks:

  • They are usually hard and dense.
  • They may exhibit banding or foliation (layered appearance).
  • They can have recrystallized mineral grains.
  • They may or may not contain fossils, depending on the original rock.

Types of metamorphic rocks include:

  • Foliated Metamorphic Rocks: Have a layered or banded appearance due to mineral alignment (e.g., Slate, Schist, Gneiss).
  • Non-foliated Metamorphic Rocks: Do not have a layered appearance (e.g., Marble, Quartzite).
