Relationship between Longitude and Time

- The Earth rotates 15 degrees of longitude in 1 hour (360° / 24 hours = 15°/hour).
- The Earth rotates 1 degree of longitude in 4 minutes (60 minutes / 15° = 4 minutes/degree).
- Places located to the East of a reference meridian are ahead in time.
- Places located to the West of a reference meridian are behind in time.
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)
Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) is the mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, which lies on the Prime Meridian (0° longitude). It serves as the international standard reference time for all other time zones.
Local Time
Local time is the time of a specific place, determined by its exact longitude and the position of the sun directly overhead (noon). It varies continuously with every degree of longitude.
Standard Time
