A. Rocks

Rocks are naturally occurring solid aggregates of one or more minerals that form the Earth’s crust.

The following are the three main types of rocks based on their mode of formation:

  • Igneous Rocks: Formed from the cooling and solidification of molten magma or lava. Examples include granite, basalt, gabbro.
  • Sedimentary Rocks: Formed from the accumulation and compaction of sediments (fragments of other rocks, minerals, or organic matter). Examples include sandstone, limestone, shale.
  • Metamorphic Rocks: Formed when existing igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks are subjected to intense heat, pressure, or chemical alteration. Examples include marble (from limestone), slate (from shale), quartzite (from sandstone).

The following are some uses of rocks:

  • Building and Construction: Used as aggregates in concrete, building stones (granite, marble), roofing (slate).
  • Manufacturing: Used in cement production (limestone), glass making (sandstone).
  • Road Construction: Crushed rocks are used as road base materials.
  • Gemstones: Some rocks and minerals are cut and polished for jewellery.
  • Agriculture: Limestone is used to neutralize acidic soils.

B. Mountains

Mountains are large natural elevations of the Earth’s surface rising abruptly from the surrounding level, typically with steep slopes and a distinct summit.

The following are the two types of mountains based on their formation discussed:

  • Fold Mountains: Formed when two tectonic plates collide, causing the Earth’s crust to buckle, fold, and uplift. Examples include the Himalayas, Andes, Alps, Rockies.
  • Block Mountains (Fault-Block Mountains): Formed when large blocks of the Earth’s crust are uplifted or down-dropped along fault lines due to tensional or compressional forces. Examples include the Sierra Nevada in the USA, Vosges in France, Black Forest in Germany.

The following are characteristics of mountains:

  • They have high altitudes compared to their surroundings.
  • They typically have steep slopes.
  • They often have pointed or rounded summits.
  • They can occur as isolated peaks or in ranges.
  • Their climate is generally colder with higher rainfall.

The following are uses and importance of mountains:

  • Water Resources: Act as sources of rivers and provide freshwater from snowmelt.
  • Forest Resources: Support diverse forests, providing timber and non-timber forest products.
  • Mineral Resources: Often rich in various minerals such as gold, silver, copper, coal.
  • Tourism and Recreation: Attract tourists for activities like hiking, skiing, mountaineering, and sightseeing.
  • Climate Regulation: Influence regional weather patterns and create rain shadow effects.
  • Biodiversity Hotspots: Host unique ecosystems and a wide range of plant and animal species.
