Meaning of Latitude
Latitude is the angular distance of a point on the Earth’s surface, measured in degrees north or south of the Equator. Lines of latitude run horizontally from east to west, parallel to the Equator.
The following are characteristics of lines of latitude:
- They are parallel circles.
- They decrease in length from the Equator to the poles.
- They are measured from 0° at the Equator to 90° North (N) or 90° South (S) at the poles.
Important Lines of Latitude
The following are important lines of latitude:
- Equator (0°): The longest line of latitude, dividing the Earth into Northern and Southern Hemispheres.
- Tropic of Cancer (23.5° N): The northernmost point where the sun’s rays can be directly overhead.
- Tropic of Capricorn (23.5° S): The southernmost point where the sun’s rays can be directly overhead.
- Arctic Circle (66.5° N): Defines the northern polar region.
- Antarctic Circle (66.5° S): Defines the southern polar region.
- North Pole (90° N) and South Pole (90° S): Points at the extreme ends of the Earth’s axis.
Calculating Distances Using Lines of Latitude
The distance between any two degrees of latitude is approximately 111 km (or 69 miles).
To calculate distance along a meridian:
Distance = Difference in latitude in degrees × 111 km
Example: Distance between 10°N and 20°N = (20 – 10) × 111 km = 10 × 111 km = 1110 km.
Meaning of Longitude
Longitude is the angular distance of a point on the Earth’s surface, measured in degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian. Lines of longitude (meridians) run vertically from the North Pole to the South Pole.
The following are characteristics of lines of longitude:
- They are semi-circles that converge at the poles.
- They are all of equal length.
- They are measured from 0° at the Prime Meridian to 180° East (E) or 180° West (W).
Important Lines of Longitude and Their Uses
The following are important lines of longitude:
- Prime Meridian (0°): Also known as the Greenwich Meridian, it passes through Greenwich, London, and serves as the reference for measuring longitude and world time.
- International Date Line (180° E/W): An imaginary line opposite the Prime Meridian, where a new day officially begins. Crossing it eastward subtracts a day, and crossing it westward adds a day.
Uses of Longitude (Time Zones)
Longitude is used to determine local time and time zones.
- The Earth rotates 360° in 24 hours.
- Therefore, for every 15° of longitude, there is a 1-hour difference in time (360°/24 hours = 15°/hour).
- Places to the east of the Prime Meridian are ahead in time, while places to the west are behind.
- GMT (Greenwich Mean Time): The mean solar time at the Prime Meridian, used as a global time reference.
Similarities and Differences between Latitude and Longitude
Similarities:
- Both are imaginary lines on the Earth’s surface.
- Both are measured in degrees.

Differences:
- Latitudes run east-west; longitudes run north-south.

- Small Circle: A circle on the surface of a sphere whose plane does not pass through the center of the sphere. All lines of latitude except the Equator are small circles.
