Features of the Lower Course

Levees

Levees are natural embankments or raised banks found on either side of a river channel in its lower course. They are formed when a river overflows its banks, depositing coarser sediments near the channel and finer sediments further away. Repeated flooding builds up these banks.

Delta

A delta is a low-lying, triangular-shaped landform created at the mouth of a river where its main stream splits into several distributaries before entering a larger body of water (e.g., sea, ocean, lake).

Characteristics of Deltas

The following are characteristics of deltas:

  • Triangular or fan-shaped.
  • Low-lying and often marshy.
  • Consist of fine sediments (silt, clay, sand).
  • Crossed by numerous small channels called distributaries.

Conditions Necessary for Delta Formation

  • Large supply of sediments from the river’s upper and middle courses.
  • Shallow coastal waters where the river enters the sea or lake.
  • Low tidal range (weak ocean currents) at the river mouth to prevent sediments from being swept away.
  • Absence of strong waves or currents that could disperse sediments.
  • Absence of strong currents in the receiving body of water.

Types of Deltas

The following are common types of deltas:

  • Arcuate Delta (Fan-shaped): Has a curved, convex outer margin, resembling an arc. Example: Nile Delta, Niger Delta.
  • Bird’s Foot Delta: Characterized by long, projecting distributaries that resemble a bird’s foot. Example: Mississippi Delta.
  • Estuarine Delta: Formed in a submerged river valley (estuary) where the river’s mouth is wide and funnel-shaped. Example: Seine River Delta (France).

Importance of Deltas
