Meaning of Earth’s Rotation

Earth’s rotation refers to the spinning of the Earth on its own axis. The axis is an imaginary line passing through the North and South Poles. The Earth rotates from west to east, completing one full rotation in approximately 24 hours. This rotation is responsible for the cycle of day and night.

Meaning of Earth’s Revolution

Earth’s revolution is the movement of the Earth in an elliptical orbit around the Sun. This movement takes approximately 365¼ days (one year) to complete. The Earth’s revolution, combined with the tilt of its axis, is responsible for the change of seasons.

Effects of Earth’s Rotation

The rotation of the Earth on its axis has several significant effects:

  1. Occurrence of Day and Night: As the Earth rotates, different parts of its surface are exposed to the Sun’s light, resulting in day, while the parts facing away from the Sun experience night. This continuous rotation creates the 24-hour cycle of day and night.
  2. Apparent Movement of the Sun, Moon, and Stars: Due to Earth’s rotation, the Sun appears to rise in the east and set in the west. Similarly, the Moon and stars appear to move across the sky. This is an apparent movement, as it is the Earth that is moving.
  3. Flattening at the Poles and Bulging at the Equator: The centrifugal force generated by Earth’s rotation causes the planet to bulge slightly at the equator and flatten at the poles.
  4. Deflection of Winds and Ocean Currents (Coriolis Effect): Earth’s rotation causes a deflection of moving objects, including winds and ocean currents, to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere. This is known as the Coriolis effect.
  5. Occurrence of Tides: The rotation of the Earth, combined with the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun, influences the rise and fall of ocean tides.
  6. Time Difference: The Earth rotates 360 degrees in 24 hours, meaning it rotates 15 degrees of longitude every hour (360/24 = 15). This rotation leads to different parts of the world experiencing different times simultaneously.
Occurrence of Day and Night

The Earth is spherical, and the Sun can only illuminate one half of it at any given time. As the Earth spins on its axis, the illuminated half continuously changes. The part of the Earth facing the Sun experiences daylight, while the part facing away experiences darkness (night). This continuous rotation ensures that every part of the Earth eventually experiences both day and night within a 24-hour period.

Time Difference

Because the Earth rotates from west to east, places to the east experience sunrise earlier and are ahead in time compared to places to the west. The Earth is divided into 24 time zones, each approximately 15 degrees of longitude wide. The Prime Meridian (0° longitude) is the reference point for Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or Universal Coordinated Time (UTC). For every 15 degrees eastward, time increases by one hour, and for every 15 degrees westward, time decreases by one hour.

For example, if it is 12:00 PM (noon) at the Prime Meridian (0°), then at 15° East, it will be 1:00 PM, and at 15° West, it will be 11:00 AM.
