  • Representative Fraction (RF): A ratio (e.g., 1:50,000) indicating that one unit on the map represents 50,000 units on the ground.
  • Statement Scale: A verbal description (e.g., “1 cm to 1 km”) explaining the relationship between map and ground distance.

Conversion of Real Distance to Map Distance

Conversion involves translating distances from the real world to their representation on a map, or vice versa, using the map’s scale.

To convert real distance to map distance:

  • Identify the map scale (e.g., 1:50,000 or 1 cm to 0.5 km).
  • Ensure both real distance and map scale units are consistent (e.g., convert km to cm).
  • Apply the scale ratio to the real distance to find the corresponding map distance.

Map Reduction

Map reduction is the process of decreasing the scale of a map, making geographical features appear smaller and covering a larger area on a smaller sheet of paper.
