Meaning and Effects of Friction
Friction is the force that opposes the motion of one surface sliding or rolling over another. This means that friction slows down or stops moving objects.
Effects of Friction:
The following are examples of the effects of friction:
- Slows down motion: Friction between car brakes and wheels helps slow the car down. friction between a book and a table slows down the book when pushed.
- Produces heat: Rubbing hands together generates warmth due to friction. Sharpening a knife on a stone produces heat.
- Wears surfaces: Constant friction on shoe soles makes them wear out. Car tires wear out due to friction with the road.
- Enables grip: Friction allows us to hold objects securely, like a pen while writing. it also helps tires grip the road.
- Affects efficiency: Machines may require oiling to reduce friction and work more smoothly. Bicycle chains need lubrication to reduce friction.
