Air Pressure Applications

Navigation

Air pressure plays a crucial role in navigation, particularly in how boats and ships function. The principles of buoyancy and displacement, which are directly related to air and water pressure, allow vessels to float and move through water.

Generation of electricity

Windmills are used to generate electricity. Wind, which is moving air, exerts pressure on the blades of a windmill, causing them to rotate. This rotation is then converted into electrical energy.



Applications of Air Pressure

Air pressure acts in all directions. Drinking through a straw works because lowering pressure in the mouth allows outside air pressure to push liquid upward. Syringes, bicycle pumps, suction cups, spray bottles and weather instruments also use pressure differences.

Air moves from higher toward lower pressure. Pupils should not use pressurised cans, pumps or syringes on the body or point them at another person.
