Functions of the Blood Vessels
Blood vessels are tubes that transport blood throughout the body. They ensure oxygen, nutrients, and waste products are carried to and from different parts of the body.
Parts of the Blood Vessels:
These include:
- Arteries
- Veins
- Capillaries
- Arterioles
- Venules
Functions of the Blood vessels:
The following are:
- Transport oxygen-rich blood (arteries) and oxygen-poor blood (veins).
- connect arteries and veins (capillaries).
- Deliver nutrients and remove waste from tissues.
- help maintain blood pressure.
- Regulate body temperature by adjusting blood flow.
- transport hormones from endocrine glands to target organs.
- Participate in the immune response by carrying white blood cells.
Functions of Blood Vessels
Arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins carry blood toward the heart, and capillaries are tiny vessels where gases, nutrients and wastes are exchanged with tissues. Their walls differ because their functions differ.
The pulmonary artery carries oxygen-poor blood to the lungs and the pulmonary vein carries oxygen-rich blood to the heart, showing that artery and vein are defined by direction, not oxygen content.
