Topic: Formation Of Shapes And Painting
Content/Learning Area: Forming lines to make shapes for designs Eg. Geometrical shapes…….
Performance Objectives
By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:
- Cognitive Domain: Identify different lines and use them to form simple geometric shapes.
- Affective Domain: Appreciate the importance of shapes in designs and show interest in creating them.
- Psychomotor Domain: Draw straight and curved lines to create circles, squares, and triangles.
- Social Domain: Work together in groups to form shapes and share their drawings.
Reference Materials
The following resources were used in planning this lesson:
- 9 Years Basic Education Curriculum
- Abuja Educational Resource Centre Scheme of work
- NAPPS National Unified Scheme of Work
- Online information from: Wikipedia – Shape
- Relevant Textbooks
Instructional Materials
The teacher will teach this lesson with the aid of:
- Drawing books
- Rulers and pencils
- Colouring materials (crayons, markers, paints)
- Chart papers with geometric shapes
- Flash cards with lines and patterns
- Real-life objects shaped like circles, squares, and triangles
Rationale for the Lesson
Understanding the formation of shapes through lines helps pupils develop creative expression, drawing skills, and appreciation of art in daily life.
Prerequisite/Previous Knowledge
Pupils can already draw simple lines and have seen different shapes in their environment like balls, books, and rooftops.
Lesson Content
Formation of Shapes and Painting
Shapes are made when we join lines together. We can use straight or curved lines to form different designs. These shapes can also be painted with bright colours.
Types of Lines
Lines are marks we draw on paper. They help us to create shapes.
The following are types of lines:
- Straight line
- Curved line
- Zigzag line
- Wavy line
- Dotted line
Formation of Shapes
We use lines to make different shapes. Shapes are the basic forms we see in designs. Examples are:
- Circle
- Square
- Triangle
- Rectangle
- Oval
Painting of Shapes
After drawing shapes, we can paint them with colours. Colours make our designs attractive and beautiful. The following are examples of painting shapes:
- Painting a circle with red
- Painting a square with blue
- Painting a triangle with yellow
- Painting a rectangle with green
- Painting an oval with orange
Teaching Methods
Discussion, Lecture, Explanation, Demonstration, Group Work, Visual Aids
Instructional Procedures
To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:
Step 1: Introduction
Time: 5 mins
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher shows pupils objects like a ball, book, and roof and asks them to name their shapes.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe and respond by naming the shapes.
Learning Point: Pupils connect real-life objects with shapes.
Step 2: Types of Lines
Time: 7 mins
Teaching Skill: Explanation
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher draws different lines on the board and explains each one.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils observe, identify, and repeat the names of lines.
Learning Point: Pupils learn the types of lines.
Step 3: Formation of Shapes
Time: 8 mins
Teaching Skill: Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher uses lines to form circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and oval on the board.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils copy and form shapes in their books.
Learning Point: Pupils understand how to form shapes with lines.
Step 4: Painting of Shapes
Time: 7 mins
Teaching Skill: Demonstration
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher shows pupils how to paint shapes with different colours.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils paint their drawn shapes with given colours.
Learning Point: Pupils learn to beautify shapes using colours.
Step 5: Note Taking
Time: 5 mins
Teaching Skill: Reinforcement
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher dictates key notes on types of lines, formation, and painting of shapes.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils copy notes correctly.
Learning Point: Pupils keep a record of lesson notes.
Step 6: Evaluation
Time: 5 mins
Teaching Skill: Questioning
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher asks pupils to draw and paint at least three shapes.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils attempt the task individually.
Learning Point: Pupils demonstrate their understanding of the lesson.
Objective-aligned checks:
- Identify different lines and use them to form simple geometric shapes.
- Draw straight and curved lines to create circles, squares, and triangles.
Step 7: Conclusion
Time: 3 mins
Teaching Skill: Closure
Teacher’s Activity: Teacher reviews the lesson, praises pupils’ effort, and reminds them that lines and shapes are important in art.
Pupils’ Activity: Pupils listen and participate in closing remarks.
Learning Point: Pupils reflect on the importance of lines and shapes.
Home Task: Describe or illustrate one lesson example of Formation Of Shapes And Painting and include one safety or performance rule. Do not practise a risky activity without adult supervision.
Lesson Keywords
- Line: A mark drawn on a surface
- Shape: A form made by joining lines
- Circle: A round shape without corners
- Square: A shape with four equal sides
- Triangle: A shape with three sides
Lesson Evaluation
To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:
- Mention two types of lines.
- Draw a circle and a square.
- Name three examples of shapes.
- Paint a triangle with any colour.
- Explain one importance of painting shapes.
Differentiation
Teacher supports slower learners with guided hand-holding while allowing faster learners to assist peers in drawing and painting shapes.
Note for teachers using this lesson plan
Use bright colours and real-life objects to make the lesson more interesting. Encourage pupils to practice drawing at home for better improvement.
