Lesson Content

Athletics – Long Jump

Long jump is a basic athletic skill combining speed, power, and technique. The goal is to jump the furthest distance possible from a marked take-off point.

What is Long Jump?

Long jump is a track and field event where athletes compete to jump the farthest distance. It requires a blend of speed, power, and precise technique.

Basic Skills in Long Jump

The long jump involves several key skills that contribute to a prosperous jump:
These include:
1.Approach: A controlled run-up to build speed and momentum for the jump. Maintaining a straight line and consistent stride is key.
2. Take-off: The powerful launch from the ground, using the strong leg to propel the body upwards. A strong, explosive movement is crucial.
3. flight: The airborne phase where balance and body position are vital for a prosperous landing.Maintaining a streamlined position with extended legs and swinging arms is recommended.
4. Landing: The safe touchdown, minimizing injury risk. Landing on the feet with bent knees and a relaxed body is essential. Safe landing techniques are crucial.

Approach

The approach involves a run-up to the take-off board. Building speed and momentum is crucial. Athletes should run straight, maintaining a smooth and consistent stride.

Take-off

The take-off is the moment of leaving the ground. Athletes use thier power to launch themselves. They should take off with their stronger leg, using a strong, explosive push.

Flight

The flight phase is the time spent airborne. Maintaining balance and proper body position is important for a good landing. Athletes should keep their bodies streamlined, legs extended, and arms swinging.

Landing

The landing is the moment of touching down.Safe landing is crucial to avoid injuries. Athletes should land on their feet, with bent knees and a relaxed body.

Teaching Methods

To deliver this lesson,‌ ⁤the teacher will⁤ adopt⁤ the following methods: Clarification, presentation, Question and Answer, and Guided practice.

Instructional Procedures

To deliver this lesson, the teacher will adopt the following steps:

Step 1: Introduction (Set Induction)

time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Set Induction
Teacher’s Activity: Introduce the topic of long jump, engage pupils with questions about jumping, and show a picture or video of long jump.
Pupils’ Activity: Respond to questions, watch the video/picture, and listen attentively.

Step 2: Clarification of Key Concepts

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Explaining,Illustrating
teacher’s Activity: Explain the four phases of long jump (approach,take-off,flight,landing) using simple language and visuals.
Pupils’ Activity: Listen attentively, ask clarifying questions, and take notes.

Step 3: Demonstration/Guided Practice

Time: 15 minutes
Teaching Skill: Demonstrating, Guiding
Teacher’s Activity: Demonstrate the correct techniques for each phase of the long jump. Guide pupils through practice drills focusing on one phase at a time.
Pupils’ Activity: Observe the demonstration, practice the drills under teacher supervision, and ask for feedback.

Step 4: Self-reliant Practice

Time: 10 minutes
Teaching Skill: Monitoring, Providing Feedback
Teacher’s Activity: Supervise pupils as they practice long jump, providing individual feedback and corrections.
Pupils’ Activity: Practice long jump independently, applying the techniques learned.

Step 5: note-Taking

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Summarizing, Note-Taking
Teacher’s Activity: Guide pupils in summarizing the key concepts and writing notes.
Pupils’ Activity: Take notes, summarize key concepts, and ask clarifying questions.

Step 6: Evaluation/Review

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Questioning, Assessing
teacher’s Activity: Ask review questions to assess understanding and provide feedback.
Pupils’ Activity: Answer review questions and participate in class discussions.

Objective-aligned checks:

  1. Mention the basic skills in long jump.
  2. Explain the different phases of long jump.
  3. Describe the take-off phase in long jump.

step 7: Conclusion

Time: 5 minutes
Teaching Skill: Summarizing, Encouraging
Teacher’s Activity: Summarize the lesson, praise pupils’ efforts, and encourage continued practice.
Pupils’ activity: Listen attentively and participate in the concluding discussion.

lesson Keywords

  • Approach – The run-up to the take-off board to gain speed.
  • Take-off – The act of launching oneself into the air.
  • Flight – The airborne phase of the jump.
  • Landing – The act of touching down after the jump.
  • technique – The specific method and form used in long jump.

Lesson Evaluation

To evaluate the learning, the teacher asks pupils to:
1. What are the four main phases of a long jump?
2.Describe the approach phase. What is its purpose?
3.How should you land safely after a long jump? Why is this critically important?
4. Why is maintaining balance during the flight phase critically important?
5.What are some tips for improving your take-off technique?

Assignment/Homework

1. Practice the approach run and take-off technique at home.
2. Research famous long jumpers and their achievements.
3. Wriet a short paragraph about the importance of safety in long jump.

Differentiation

  • For slower learners: Provide one-on-one assistance and break down the skills into smaller, more manageable steps.
  • For advanced learners: encourage them to explore more advanced techniques and strategies.
  • For visual/auditory/kinesthetic learners: Use visual aids, verbal instructions, and hands-on practice to cater to different learning styles.

Note for Teachers

Ensure a safe practice environment with soft landing areas. Emphasize the importance of proper technique to prevent injuries.Encourage pupils to participate actively and provide constructive feedback.
