Al-Nawawi Hadith 3 and Hadith 5
Al-Nawawi Hadith 3: The Pillars of Islam
English Translation: On the authority of Abdullah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “Islam has been built upon five [pillars]: testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, giving the zakat, making pilgrimage to the House, and fasting in Ramadan.” (Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim).
The meaning of this Hadith is that the religion of Islam is founded upon five essential components, which are fundamental to a Muslim’s faith and practice.
The following are lessons learnt from Al-Nawawi Hadith 3:
- It identifies the five pillars of Islam: Shahadah, Salat, Zakat, Sawm (Fasting), and Hajj.
- These pillars are the foundation upon which a Muslim’s life and practice are built.
- The Hadith emphasizes the importance of Tawhid (Oneness of Allah) as the primary pillar.
- Observing these pillars is essential for a complete and sound Islamic faith.
Al-Nawawi Hadith 5: Prohibition of Innovation (Bid’ah)
English Translation: On the authority of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whosoever introduces into this affair of ours (i.e. Islam) anything which does not belong to it, it is to be rejected.” (Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim). And in a narration by Muslim: “Whosoever performs any deed which is not in accordance with our affair (Islam), it is rejected.”
The meaning of this Hadith is that any new practice or belief introduced into Islam that is not originally part of it will be rejected by Allah and is invalid.
The following are lessons learnt from Al-Nawawi Hadith 5:
- It prohibits innovations (Bid’ah) in religious matters.
- It emphasizes the importance of following the Sunnah (the way of the Prophet) and established Islamic practices.
- Actions or beliefs that are not in conformity with the teachings of Islam are unacceptable.
- Muslims should be careful to preserve the purity of the religion by avoiding un-Islamic practices.
