The Hydrometer Test for Soil Texture

Steps to Conduct a Hydrometer Test

  1. Prepare Soil Sample: Take a representative soil sample, remove large debris, and air-dry it.
  2. Weigh Soil: Weigh a specific amount of the dry soil (e.g., 50 grams).
  3. Disperse Soil: Place the soil in a measuring cylinder or clear jar, add water, and a dispersing agent (if available) to break up soil aggregates. Shake vigorously to ensure all particles are separated.
  4. Allow Settling: Place the cylinder on a flat surface and allow the particles to settle.
  5. Take Readings:
    • After 40 seconds, read the hydrometer. This reading helps determine the sand content.
    • After 2 hours, take another hydrometer reading. This reading helps determine the silt and clay content.
  6. Calculate Percentages: Use the hydrometer readings and a soil triangle chart to calculate the percentages of sand, silt, and clay, and thus determine the soil texture class.
