The Glorious Qur’an: Suratul Tin, Suratul Alaq, and Suratul Qadr

Suratul Tin (The Fig)

Suratul Tin is the 95th chapter of the Qur’an, consisting of 8 verses. It emphasizes Allah’s power in creation and the noble status of humanity.

Translation Summary: The Surah begins with oaths by sacred places and fruits, highlighting the creation of humanity in the best of forms. It then states that humans are reduced to the lowest of the low, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds, who will have an unending reward. It concludes by affirming Allah as the most just of judges.

The following are lessons from Suratul Tin:

Allah is the perfect Creator who fashioned humanity in the best form.
Belief in Allah and performing good deeds are essential for a good reward in the afterlife.
Humans have the potential to be noble, but can fall to low levels through disbelief and wrongdoing.
Allah is the ultimate Judge and His justice is supreme.

Suratul Alaq (The Clot)

Suratul Alaq is the 96th chapter of the Qur’an, consisting of 19 verses. The first five verses were the very first revelation received by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Translation Summary: The Surah begins with the command “Read!” in the name of your Lord who created, created man from a clinging clot. It speaks of Allah’s generosity in teaching by the pen and teaching man what he did not know. It then warns against human transgression and arrogance when one sees oneself as self-sufficient, reminding of the return to Allah.

The following are lessons from Suratul Alaq:

The first command in Islam is to “Read!” emphasizing the importance of knowledge and learning.
Allah is the ultimate source of knowledge and teaches humanity through various means, including the pen.
Humanity was created by Allah from humble beginnings (a clinging clot).
Arrogance and rebellion against Allah lead to severe consequences.
All humans will return to Allah for judgment.

Suratul Qadr (The Power/Decree)

Suratul Qadr is the 97th chapter of the Qur’an, consisting of 5 verses. It describes the blessings and significance of Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Decree).

Translation Summary: The Surah states that the Qur’an was revealed on Laylatul Qadr, which is better than a thousand months. It describes this night as one when angels and the Spirit (Jibreel) descend by Allah’s permission with every decree, and it is full of peace until the emergence of dawn.

The Qur’an was revealed on a blessed night known as Laylatul Qadr.
Worshipping on Laylatul Qadr is superior to worshipping for a thousand months (over 83 years).
On this night, angels and the Archangel Jibreel descend with divine decrees.
