Lesson Content/Board Summary

The Concept of Zakat and its Distribution

1. Definition of Zakat

Zakat is an obligatory charity paid annually by Muslims who meet the minimum wealth requirement (Nisab) to specific categories of beneficiaries. It is one of the five pillars of Islam, signifying purification of wealth and spiritual growth.

2. Relevant Qur’anic Verses about Zakat

The Holy Qur’an commands Muslims to pay Zakat and outlines its importance. The following are examples of themes found in relevant Qur’anic verses:

  • Command to establish prayer and give Zakat (e.g., Surah Al-Baqarah 2:43, 2:110).
  • Description of the categories of Zakat beneficiaries (Surah At-Tawbah 9:60).
  • Emphasis on Zakat as a means of purification and growth.

3. Relevant Hadith about Zakat

The teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) further explain the details and significance of Zakat. The following are themes found in relevant Hadith:

  • Zakat as one of the five pillars of Islam.
  • Explanation of Nisab (the minimum amount of wealth subject to Zakat) for different types of assets.
  • The spiritual rewards and benefits of paying Zakat.
  • Warnings against withholding Zakat.

4. Distribution of Zakat

Zakat is collected and distributed to ensure it reaches those who are eligible. The following points describe its distribution:

  • Zakat should be collected by authorized bodies or trustworthy individuals.
  • It is distributed directly to the eight categories of beneficiaries mentioned in the Qur’an.
  • The distribution aims to alleviate poverty, reduce financial hardship, and promote economic justice within the Muslim community.

5. Beneficiaries of Zakat

According to Surah At-Tawbah (Chapter 9, Verse 60) of the Holy Qur’an, Zakat is to be distributed among eight categories of people. The following are the beneficiaries of Zakat:

  • The poor (Al-Fuqara’): Those who have some wealth but not enough to meet their basic needs.
  • The needy (Al-Masakin): Those who have no wealth at all and are in severe destitution.
  • Zakat administrators (Al-Amilin Alaiha): Those appointed to collect and distribute Zakat.
  • Those whose hearts are to be reconciled (Al-Mu’allafatu Qulubuhum): New converts to Islam or those inclined towards Islam, to strengthen their faith.
  • For freeing captives (Ar-Riqab): To free slaves or captives.
  • Those in debt (Al-Gharimin): Those burdened by overwhelming debt, provided it was not incurred for unlawful purposes.
  • In the cause of Allah (Fi Sabilillah): For those striving in the path of Allah, such as for Jihad or spreading Islamic knowledge.
  • The wayfarer (Ibn As-Sabil): Travelers who are stranded and need financial assistance to return home.
