An-Nawawi Hadith 1: Actions are by Intentions

This Hadith teaches about the importance of intentions in all actions performed by a Muslim.

The Arabic text of Hadith 1 is:

عَنْ أَمِيرِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَبِي حَفْصٍ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ: “إِنَّمَا الأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ، وَإِنَّمَا لِكُلِّ امْرِئٍ مَا نَوَى. فَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ، فَهِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى اللهِ وَرَسُولِهِ، وَمَنْ كَانَتْ هِجْرَتُهُ لِدُنْيَا يُصِيبُهَا أَوْ امْرَأَةٍ يَنْكِحُهَا، فَهِجْرَتُهُ إِلَى مَا هَاجَرَ إِلَيْهِ.”

Meaning: “Actions are but by intentions, and every man will have but what he intended. So whoever emigrated for Allah and His Messenger, then his emigration was for Allah and His Messenger. And whoever emigrated for worldly gain or a woman to marry, then his emigration was for that for which he emigrated.”

The key lessons from Hadith 1 are:

Sincerity (ikhlas) is essential for any action to be accepted by Allah.
The intention behind an act determines its reward and value in Islam.
Actions done without a good intention, even if outwardly good, may not be rewarded.

An-Nawawi Hadith 2: The Pillars of Islam

This Hadith outlines the fundamental pillars upon which the religion of Islam is built.

The Arabic text of Hadith 2 is:

عَنْ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَيْضًا قَالَ: بَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ جُلُوسٌ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ إِذْ طَلَعَ عَلَيْنَا رَجُلٌ شَدِيدُ بَيَاضِ الثِّيَابِ شَدِيدُ سَوَادِ الشَّعَرِ لا يُرَى عَلَيْهِ أَثَرُ السَّفَرِ وَلا يَعْرِفُهُ مِنَّا أَحَدٌ حَتَّى جَلَسَ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَأَسْنَدَ رُكْبَتَيْهِ إِلَى رُكْبَتَيْهِ وَوَضَعَ كَفَّيْهِ عَلَى فَخْذَيْهِ وَقَالَ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ أَخْبِرْنِي عَنِ الإِسْلامِ. فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم: “الإِسْلامُ أَنْ تَشْهَدَ أَنْ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللهُ وَأَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ، وَتُقِيمَ الصَّلاةَ، وَتُؤْتِيَ الزَّكَاةَ، وَتَصُومَ رَمَضَانَ، وَتَحُجَّ الْبَيْتَ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ إِلَيْهِ سَبِيلا.”

Meaning: “Islam has been built upon five [pillars]: testifying that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, establishing the prayer, paying the zakat, making the pilgrimage [to Makkah], and fasting [in] Ramadan.”

The five pillars of Islam mentioned in Hadith 2 are:

Shahada: The declaration of faith (testifying that there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger).
Salat: The performance of the five daily prayers.
Zakat: The giving of charity to the poor and needy.
Sawm: Fasting during the month of Ramadan.
Hajj: The pilgrimage to Makkah, for those who are able.
