Woodwork Hand Tools: Cutting Tools and Their Uses

Cutting tools are very significant for shaping wood. These include:

  1. Saw: Used for cutting wood into different sizes and shapes.
  2. Chisel: Used for carving and shaping wood with precision.
  3. plane: Used for smoothing and flattening wood surfaces.
  4. Rasp: Used for shaping and smoothing rough surfaces.
  5. Utility Knife: Used for cutting thin strips of wood or trimming edges.
  6. Axe: Used for splitting wood along the grain.
  7. Coping Saw: Used for cutting curves and intricate shapes in wood.

Woodwork Cutting Tools and Safe Use

Common wood-cutting tools include saws for separating stock and chisels for removing or shaping small areas. A rip saw cuts mainly along the grain, while a cross-cut saw cuts mainly across it. Tool choice also depends on thickness and finish.

Secure the wood, keep the free hand away from the cutting path, start the cut under supervision and carry edged tools safely. Blunt or damaged tools can slip and should be reported.
