Woodwork hand Tools: Measuring And Marking Tools
Measuring and marking tools are very critically important for accurate woodwork.
Examples of measuring and Marking Tools:
These include:
- Measuring Tape: Used for measuring long distances accurately.
- Ruler: Used for measuring short distances and straight lines.
- Square: Used to make sure angles are perfectly square (90 degrees).
- Marking Gauge: Used to mark lines parallel to the edge of the wood.
- Protractor: Used for measuring and marking angles other than 90 degrees.
- Compass: Used for drawing circles,arcs,and transferring measurements.
Woodwork Measuring and Marking Tools
A steel rule or tape measures length, a try square marks and checks a right angle, a marking gauge produces a line parallel to an edge, and a pencil or marking knife shows where work will be cut. The tool is chosen by the measurement and required accuracy.
Measure from a sound reference edge, read the scale at eye level and mark once clearly. The workshop rule “measure twice, cut once” reduces wasted material.
