Pulley as a Machine

A pulley is a simple machine that uses a grooved wheel and a rope to raise,lower,or move a load.

Components of a Pulley

A pulley system consists of several key components that work together:

  • Wheel – The circular part of the pulley that rotates.
  • Groove – The channel around the wheel that guides the rope.
  • Rope – The flexible material used to transmit force.
  • Axle – The central rod around which the wheel rotates.
  • Frame/Support – The structure that holds the pulley in place.
  • Load – The object being lifted or moved.
  • Effort – the force applied to the rope.
  • Resistance – The force opposing the effort, usually the weight of the load.

Pulley Components and Operation

A simple pulley has a grooved wheel, axle or support, and a rope or cable. The load is the object moved and the effort is the force applied. A fixed pulley mainly changes the direction of effort; movable and combined systems can reduce the effort needed, although more rope must be pulled.

A classroom model should use light loads, a secure support and fingers kept away from the wheel. Friction means real pulleys are not perfectly efficient.
