Plane objects such as rectangles, triangles, or simple shapes can be drawn using a chosen scale that reduces or enlarges their actual dimensions.
The following are examples of drawing objects to scale:
- A table of actual length 150 cm drawn with a scale of 1:50 becomes:
150 ÷ 50 = 3 cm. - A rectangular field measuring 40 m by 25 m drawn to scale 1:200 becomes:
40 m → 4000 cm → 4000 ÷ 200 = 20 cm;
25 m → 2500 cm → 2500 ÷ 200 = 12.5 cm.
Converting Actual Lengths to Scale
Conversion means changing real-life sizes into their corresponding scaled lengths using the given scale ratio.
The following are steps for converting actual lengths to scale:
- Change measurements to the same unit.
- Divide the actual length by the scale factor.
- Use the result as the scaled length in the drawing.
Calculation from Scale Drawing
Calculations help determine actual distances or dimensions by reversing the scale ratio when the scaled drawing is known.
Examples are:
- If a scaled drawing shows 4 cm with a scale of 1:100, actual length = 4 × 100 = 400 cm.
- A map scale of 1:2000 shows two towns 3.5 cm apart. Actual distance = 3.5 × 2000 = 7000 cm = 70 m.
Combination of Plane Shapes to Produce Design
Composite designs can be formed by joining shapes like rectangles, circles, squares, and triangles and drawing them to a common scale.
Examples include:
- Designing a house plan using a rectangle and two attached squares.
- Drawing a school logo using a circle and a triangle.
