Data Presentation in Ordered Form
Data refers to a collection of facts, such as numbers, words, measurements, observations, or descriptions of things. Raw data is data collected that has not yet been organized. Ordered data is data arranged in a specific sequence, either from the smallest to the largest (ascending order) or from the largest to the smallest (descending order).
Example: Given the following scores of 10 pupils in a test: 5, 8, 3, 7, 5, 9, 6, 3, 8, 7.
Ordered Data (Ascending): 3, 3, 5, 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9
Frequency Tables
A frequency table is a table that shows the number of times each item or value appears in a set of data. It helps to organize raw data into a more manageable form.
Components of a Frequency Table:
- Item/Score: The individual values or categories in the data set.
- Tally: Marks used to count the occurrence of each item. A group of five tally marks is represented as four vertical lines with a diagonal line through them (
IIII). - Frequency: The total number of times an item appears, obtained by counting the tally marks.
Example: Using the ordered data: 3, 3, 5, 5, 6, 7, 7, 8, 8, 9, construct a frequency table.

Pie Chart
A pie chart (or circle graph) is a circular statistical graphic divided into sectors to illustrate numerical proportions. In a pie chart, the arc length of each sector, and consequently its area and central angle, is proportional to the quantity it represents.
The entire circle represents the total frequency (100% or 360°).
Formula for calculating the angle of a sector:
Angle of sector = (Frequency of category / Total frequency) × 360°
Steps to construct a pie chart:
- Find the total frequency of the data.
- Calculate the angle for each category using the formula.
- Draw a circle using a compass.
- Use a protractor to measure and draw each sector based on its calculated angle, starting from a radius.
- Label each sector clearly with its category and/or percentage.
- Give the pie chart a suitable title.
Worked Example 1:
The favourite colours of 20 pupils are given in the frequency table below. Construct a pie chart to represent this data.

Step 4: Draw a circle with a compass, then use a protractor to draw sectors with angles 180°, 90°, and 90°. Label the sectors “Red”, “Blue”, and “Green”.

The table below shows how 30 students travel to school. Draw a pie chart for this data.
