Identifying the X and Y Axes

  1. X-axis: The horizontal line that runs from left to right.
  2. Y-axis: The vertical line that runs from bottom to top.
  3. The axes intersect at the origin (0, 0).
  4. The plane is divided into:
    • First quadrant (both x and y positive)
    • Second quadrant (x negative, y positive)

Plotting Points on the Cartesian Plane (Coordinates)

A point on the Cartesian plane is represented by an ordered pair of numbers written as (x, y). The first number (x) shows the position on the X-axis, while the second number (y) shows the position on the Y-axis.

The following are steps to plot a point:

  1. Draw and label the X and Y axes.
  2. Mark the origin (0, 0).
  3. Read the first number (x) and move along the X-axis.
  4. Read the second number (y) and move along the Y-axis.
  5. Mark the point where the two positions meet.
  6. Label the point with its coordinate, e.g., A(2, 3).

Examples include:

  • Plotting A(2, 3): Move 2 units right on the X-axis, then 3 units up on the Y-axis.
