Expressing Whole Numbers in Standard Form

Standard form is a way of writing very large or very small numbers in a simpler form using powers of ten.
A number is written in standard form when it is expressed as A × 10ⁿ, where 1 ≤ A < 10 and n is an integer.

The following are examples of expressing whole numbers in standard form:

  1. 3,000 = 3 × 10³
  2. 45,000 = 4.5 × 10⁴
  3. 250,000 = 2.5 × 10⁵
  4. 8,900,000 = 8.9 × 10⁶

Steps to express a whole number in standard form:

  1. Write down the first non-zero digit.
  2. Place a decimal point after it.
  3. Count how many places the decimal has moved from the original position.
  4. Multiply the new number by 10 raised to that power.

Expressing Decimal Numbers in Standard Form

Decimal numbers smaller than one can also be written in standard form.
In this case, the power of ten will be negative because the decimal point moves to the right to create a number between 1 and 10.

Examples include:

  1. 0.005 = 5 × 10⁻³
  2. 0.00045 = 4.5 × 10⁻⁴
  3. 0.027 = 2.7 × 10⁻²
  4. 0.0008 = 8 × 10⁻⁴

Steps to express a decimal number in standard form:

  1. Identify the first non-zero digit.
  2. Move the decimal point to make the number between 1 and 10.
  3. Count the number of decimal places moved.
  4. Write the number as A × 10⁻ⁿ, where n is the number of places moved.
