Practical Representation of Numbers

Numbers can be written in three main ways:

  1. Words Only: Writing the entire number using only words.
  2. Example: 15,345,200 is written as Fifteen million, three hundred and forty-five thousand, two hundred.

  3. Digits Only: Writing the entire number using only numerical figures.
  4. Example: Twenty-three thousand, five hundred and twelve is written as 23,512.

  5. Mixture of Digits and Words: Writing large numbers by combining digits for the main part and words for the magnitude (e.g., millions, billions). This is often used for very large numbers for brevity.
  6. Example: 7,500,000,000 can be written as 7.5 billion or 7,500 million.

    Example: ₦25,000,000 can be written as ₦25 million.

Identification of Small Numbers/Fractions

Small numbers are typically numbers less than one. They can be represented as fractions or decimals.

  1. Fractions: Represent parts of a whole (e.g., 1/2, 3/4, 5/8).
  2. Decimals: Represent fractions where the denominator is a power of ten (e.g., 0.5 for 1/2, 0.75 for 3/4, 0.125 for 1/8).

Examples of small numbers: 0.1, 0.05, 1/4, 3/100.

Place Value of Digits

The place value of a digit is its value based on its position in a number. It helps us understand the magnitude of each digit.

Place Value in Whole Numbers

For whole numbers, place values increase by powers of ten as you move to the left from the units digit.

Example: In the number 45,789

  1. 9 is in the Units place (value = 9 x 1 = 9)
  2. 8 is in the Tens place (value = 8 x 10 = 80)
  3. 7 is in the Hundreds place (value = 7 x 100 = 700)
  4. 5 is in the Thousands place (value = 5 x 1,000 = 5,000)
  5. 4 is in the Ten Thousands place (value = 4 x 10,000 = 40,000)

Example: In the number 123,456,789

  1. 9 = Units
  2. 8 = Tens
  3. 7 = Hundreds
  4. 6 = Thousands
  5. 5 = Ten Thousands
  6. 4 = Hundred Thousands
  7. 3 = Millions
  8. 2 = Ten Millions

Place Value in Small Numbers (Decimals)

For decimal numbers, place values decrease by powers of ten as you move to the right from the decimal point.

Example: In the number 0.345

  1. 3 is in the Tenths place (value = 3 x 0.1 = 0.3)
  2. 4 is in the Hundredths place (value = 4 x 0.01 = 0.04)
  3. 5 is in the Thousandths place (value = 5 x 0.001 = 0.005)

Example: In the number 12.3456

  1. 1 = Tens
