What is Chemical Energy?
Chemical energy is the energy stored within the tiny particles of everything around us. When these particles combine or separate, they release energy, causing things to happen, like moving a car or enabling our bodies to function. It’s like hidden power within everything!
Chemical energy is a type of potential energy stored in the bonds of molecules. When these bonds break, energy is released, which can be used to do work. Burning wood, such as, breaks the chemical bonds in the wood, releasing heat and light energy.
Sources of Chemical Energy
Chemical energy comes from various sources that store energy in their chemical bonds.
the following are examples of sources of chemical energy:
- Batteries: batteries store chemical energy released as electrical energy when connected to a circuit.
- Fuel: Fuels like gasoline, diesel, and natural gas store chemical energy released as heat and light when burned.
- Food: Food contains chemical energy our bodies use to grow,move,and think.
- Rocks: Some rocks, like coal and oil shale, contain chemical energy used as fuel.
- Water: Water generates electricity through hydroelectric power, harnessing the chemical energy stored in water molecules.
- Wood: Wood is a renewable source of chemical energy, producing heat and light when burned.
- Biomass: Organic matter like plants and agricultural waste can be burned to release chemical energy.
- Propane: A gas commonly used for cooking and heating, propane stores chemical energy that is released upon combustion.
Uses of Chemical Energy
Chemical energy is utilized in various ways to power devices, facilitate processes, and enable transportation.
These include:
