Lesson Content/Board Summary
Revision and Consolidation
The Qur’an: Revelation and Compilation
The Qur’an is the literal word of Allah revealed to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) through Angel Jibril. It is the primary source of Islamic law and guidance.
Key aspects of the Qur’an include:
- Revelation: Began in 610 CE in the Cave of Hira, continued for 23 years.
- Compilation: Initially memorized by companions and written on various materials.
- First Compilation (Mushaf): During the time of Abu Bakr (RA), led by Zayd ibn Thabit, after the Battle of Yamamah.
- Standardization (Uthmanic Mushaf): During the time of Uthman (RA), to unify readings and prevent disputes, copies were sent to major Islamic centres.
- Importance: Guidance for humanity, source of Shari’ah, miracle of Islam, basis of worship.
The Hadith: Definition, Importance, and Types
Hadith refers to the sayings, actions, approvals, and characteristics of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). It is the second primary source of Islamic law, explaining and elaborating on the Qur’an.
Importance of Hadith:
- Explains the Qur’an.
- Provides practical examples of Islamic teachings.
- Establishes laws not explicitly mentioned in the Qur’an.
- Guides Muslims in all aspects of life.
Types of Hadith (based on chain of narration):
- Hadith Qudsi: Words of Allah conveyed by the Prophet, but not part of the Qur’an.
- Hadith Nabawi: Sayings and actions of the Prophet himself.
Tawhid: The Oneness of Allah
Tawhid is the fundamental concept of Islam, affirming the absolute oneness of Allah. It is the core belief that Allah is one, unique, and has no partners or equals.
Aspects of Tawhid:
- Tawhid al-Rububiyyah (Oneness of Lordship): Belief that Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, and Controller of the universe.
- Tawhid al-Uluhiyyah (Oneness of Worship): Belief that Allah alone is worthy of all forms of worship (Salat, Sawm, Zakat, Hajj, Du’a, etc.).
- Tawhid al-Asma wa al-Sifat (Oneness of Names and Attributes): Belief that Allah’s names and attributes are unique and perfect, and should not be attributed to creation.
Shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the opposite and gravest sin in Islam.
Pillars of Islam: Salat (Prayer)
Salat is the ritual prayer performed five times a day, a direct connection between the worshipper and Allah. It is the second pillar of Islam.
Key aspects of Salat:
- Obligatory Prayers: Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha.
- Conditions for Salat: Purity (Taharah), covering Awrah, facing Qiblah, intention (Niyyah), prescribed times.
- Benefits: Spiritual purification, discipline, remembrance of Allah, humility, unity among Muslims.
Pillars of Iman: Belief in Allah and His Angels
Iman refers to faith or belief. The Pillars of Iman are the fundamental articles of faith in Islam.
First two pillars of Iman:
- Belief in Allah: Affirming His oneness (Tawhid), His existence, His attributes, and His exclusive right to worship.
- Belief in His Angels: Angels are unseen beings created from light, who obey Allah’s commands without question. They perform various tasks, e.g., Jibril (revelation), Mika’il (rain), Israfil (blowing the trumpet), Malik al-Mawt (angel of death), Kiraman Katibin (recording deeds).
