1. Geography as a Discipline
Geography is the scientific study of the Earth’s surface, including its physical features, climate, population, and how humans interact with their environment. It seeks to understand where things are, why they are there, and how they develop and change.
Branches of Geography:
- Physical Geography: Focuses on the natural environment, including landforms, climate, soils, vegetation, and water bodies.
- Human Geography: Deals with human activities and their impact on the Earth, such as population, settlements, economic activities, and culture.
- Regional Geography: Studies specific regions of the world, integrating both physical and human aspects.
Importance of Geography:

2. The Earth and its Movements
The Earth is an oblate spheroid, slightly flattened at the poles and bulging at the equator. Its movements include rotation and revolution.
Movements of the Earth:
- Rotation: The spinning of the Earth on its axis from west to east, completing one rotation in approximately 24 hours.
- Effects of Rotation:
- Day and night.
- Apparent movement of the sun, moon, and stars.
- Deflection of winds and ocean currents (Coriolis effect).
- Tides.
- Revolution: The movement of the Earth in an elliptical orbit around the sun, taking approximately 365¼ days to complete one revolution.
- Effects of Revolution:
- Changing seasons (summer, autumn, winter, spring).
- Varying lengths of day and night.
- Different times of sunrise and sunset.
- Occurrence of solstices (June 21/22 and December 21/22) and equinoxes (March 20/21 and September 22/23).
3. Latitude and Longitude
These are imaginary lines used to locate positions on the Earth’s surface.
Latitude:
- Imaginary lines running east to west, parallel to the Equator.
- Measured in degrees (0° to 90°) north or south of the Equator.
- The Equator is 0° latitude.
- Lines of latitude are called parallels.
- Used to determine climatic zones.
Longitude:
- Imaginary lines running north to south, from pole to pole.
- Measured in degrees (0° to 180°) east or west of the Prime Meridian (Greenwich Meridian).
- The Prime Meridian is 0° longitude.
- Lines of longitude are called meridians.
- Used to determine time zones.
4. Time
Time on Earth is determined by longitude and the Earth’s rotation.
Key Concepts:
- Local Time: The time of a particular place determined by the apparent position of the sun. Places on the same meridian have the same local time.
- Standard Time: The uniform time adopted by a country or region, usually based on the local time of a central meridian. This avoids confusion caused by numerous local times.
- Greenwich Mean Time (GMT): The mean solar time at the Prime Meridian (0° longitude) passing through Greenwich, London. It is the international reference for time.
- International Date Line (IDL): An imaginary line, mostly following the 180° meridian, where one day ends and the next begins. Crossing it eastward means subtracting a day, while crossing it westward means adding a day.
Calculation of Time:
- The Earth rotates 360° in 24 hours.
- Therefore, 1 hour = 360° / 24 = 15°.
- 1° longitude = 4 minutes (60 minutes / 15°).
- When moving eastward, time increases; when moving westward, time decreases.
5. Rocks
Rocks are naturally occurring solid aggregates of one or more minerals. They form the Earth’s crust.
Classification of Rocks:
- Igneous Rocks: Formed from the cooling and solidification of molten magma or lava.
- Intrusive (Plutonic): Cool slowly beneath the Earth’s surface, forming large crystals (e.g., Granite, Gabbro).
- Extrusive (Volcanic): Cool rapidly on the Earth’s surface, forming small or no crystals (e.g., Basalt, Pumice).
- Sedimentary Rocks: Formed from the accumulation and compaction of sediments (fragments of other rocks, organic matter, or chemical precipitates).
- Clastic: Formed from rock fragments (e.g., Sandstone, Shale, Conglomerate).
- Organic: Formed from remains of plants and animals (e.g., Coal, Limestone).
- Chemical: Formed from precipitation of minerals from water (e.g., Rock Salt, Gypsum).
- Metamorphic Rocks: Formed when existing igneous or sedimentary rocks are transformed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions.
- Examples: Marble (from Limestone), Slate (from Shale), Gneiss (from Granite), Quartzite (from Sandstone).
Economic Importance of Rocks:
- Source of building materials (granite, marble, sandstone).
- Source of fuel (coal, petroleum in sedimentary basins).
- Source of precious minerals and metals (gold, iron ore).
- Used in agriculture (limestone for soil treatment).
6. Weather and Climate
Weather refers to the atmospheric conditions of a place over a short period, while climate is the average weather condition over a long period (typically 30 years).
Elements of Weather and Climate:
- Temperature: Degree of hotness or coldness of the atmosphere. Measured by a thermometer.
- Rainfall: Water falling from the atmosphere to the Earth’s surface. Measured by a rain gauge.
- Atmospheric Pressure: The force exerted by the weight of air on a unit area of the Earth’s surface. Measured by a barometer.
- Humidity: The amount of water vapour in the atmosphere. Measured by a hygrometer.
- Wind: Air in motion. Measured by an anemometer (speed) and wind vane (direction).
- Sunshine: Duration of sunlight received. Measured by a sunshine recorder.
