Classification Based on Size

Farm animals can be classified by their physical size, which affects their care and usage on the farm.

The following are examples of farm animals by size:

  1. Large animals – Cattle, Horses, Camels, Elephants (in farm settings for special purposes).
  2. Small animals – Goats, Sheep, Rabbits, Poultry (chickens, ducks, turkeys).

Classification Based on Habitat

Farm animals can also be grouped by where they live or are mostly found.

These include:

  1. Terrestrial animals – Animals that live primarily on land, e.g., Cattle, Goats, Sheep, Pigs.
  2. Aquatic animals – Animals that live in water or spend most of their time in water, e.g., Fish, Frogs, Prawns.

Classification Based on Stomach Type

The digestive system of animals is another way to classify them.

They are:

  1. Ruminants – Animals with multi-chambered stomachs that chew cud, e.g., Cattle, Sheep, Goats.
  2. Non-ruminants – Animals with single-chambered stomachs, e.g., Pigs, Poultry, Rabbits.


Classification by Size, Habitat and Digestive System

By size, farms may describe animals as large or small livestock. By habitat, animals may be terrestrial, aquatic or amphibious. By digestion, ruminants chew cud and have a specialised multi-compartment stomach, while monogastric animals have a single main stomach.

Poultry have a distinctive digestive tract with crop and gizzard. Different criteria answer different farming questions, so groups can overlap.
