The following are the classifications of crops based on life span:

  2. Biennial Crops: These crops take two years to complete their life cycle. Examples include carrot, onion, and cabbage.
  3. Perennial Crops: These live for more than two years and keep producing after each harvest. Examples include cocoa, oil palm, and mango.
  4. Ephemeral Crops: These are very short-lived crops that can complete their life cycle within a few weeks. Examples include some weeds like mushroom and spinach.
Based on Uses

Crops are also classified based on what they are used for by humans and animals.

The following are the classifications of crops based on uses:

  1. Food Crops: These provide food for humans. Examples include yam, cassava, rice, and maize.
  2. Oil Crops: These are grown for the oil extracted from their seeds or fruits. Examples include groundnut, oil palm, and soybean.
  3. Fibre Crops: These are grown for making clothes, ropes, and bags. Examples include cotton, jute, and flax.
  4. Medicinal Crops: These are grown for their healing properties. Examples include ginger, aloe vera, and neem.
  5. Beverage Crops: These are used for making drinks. Examples include coffee, cocoa, and tea.
  6. Spice Crops: These are used to add flavour to food. Examples include pepper, ginger, and curry leaves.
